Insider Tip #28: Catching a taxi in Japan

Here are some tips to complement Adam Liaw's video guide to catching a taxi in Japan:
  • Taxis come in many colours (unlike the typical New York yellow cab or London black cab), so instead of looking for a specific colour or make, look for the lamp on top of the car.
  • If the light on top of the car is lit, the taxi is vacant.
  • The left (passenger side) rear door is automatically opened and closed by the driver, so don't try to force it by hand. You can open the front door by hand yourself.
  • It helps to have your destination's address written in Japanese to show the driver.
  • Many taxis these days accept credit cards, or even IC cards (such as SUICA cards, which can be used for trains). If you don't see a symbol on the car door, you can ask the driver, but if in doubt, cash is always accepted.
  • Best of all, there's need to tip!
