Diving with Ama in Ise-shima, Mie
Partners Information: Want to experience a dive with a real Ama? Try this unique activity in Ise-shima, Mie Prefecture.
Ama are free-diving women who gather shellfish and seaweed by hand. They dive without any mechanical diving equipment and have a history of over 3,000 years.
Ama are always careful not to over-fish the waters, using traditional tools to measure the growth of their catch and ensuring the protection of the ocean’s natural resources.
Between 1,000 and 2,000 ama fish waters across Japan from Tohoku to Kyushu, with approximately 750 living in Ise-Shima alone.
In 2017, the harvesting techniques of ama were officially designated an important folk cultural property.
