Have you ever seen Hotaru?

Hotaru means fireflies in Japanese. They fly and glow in the dark at night along clear water stream and they are popular among Japanese people. The best time to see them is in July and early August but they can be seen between June and early September throughout Japan, especially in rural area where there is clear water. Please note that the timing depends on the location and also weather conditions.

Hakuba is well known as a ski and snowboard destination among Australians but it also has a lot to offer during the summer season. Hotaru in the package tour can be seen at Lake Aoki.

This traditional Japanese restaurant is the sister restaurant of UKAI CHIKUTEI which was mentioned by Mr. Tetsuya Wakuda, the owner chef of TETSUYA’S, in Gourmet Traveller April 2010 issue. It is one of restaurants where you can see Hotaru in its garden. 

 

Limited but some English information is also available at visitors information centres in Japan.
